St. Clair County Free Programs for 0-5 Year Olds

Why should I consider preschool for my child?

Attending a high-quality early childhood program prepares children to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.  Experts agree that children who have quality early learning experiences are better prepared to be successful in school and throughout life.  St. Clair County's free preschool opportunities, Head Start, Early Head Start and the Great Start Readiness Program, use research-based curriculum to prepare children academically and socially for success in school.

Great Start Readiness Program (4 year olds)

GSRP is Michigan's state-funded preschool program for four-year-old children with factors that may place them at risk of educational failure. The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). Parents incur no cost for the program.

Research on preschool programs and specific research on GSRP indicates that children provided with a high-quality preschool experience show significant positive developmental differences when compared to children from the same backgrounds who did not attend a high-quality preschool program.

The St. Clair County RESA  serves a consortium of Great Start Readiness Programs (GSRP) throughout the county. RESA serves as the fiscal and administrative agent.

Head Start preschools provide children with a safe environment, nutritious meals, health care and the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Children attend early childhood centers four half days each week.

The Head Start program focuses on child development, family support, medical and nutritional care of enrolled children. Head Start is free of charge to children whose family's income falls within program guidelines and to children with disabilities.

The Community Action Agency of St. Clair County runs the Head Start Programs throughout the county. Visit their website for more information.
