Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder is considered a lifelong developmental disability that adversely affects a student's education in one or more of the following performance areas:

  • Communication
  • Behavior
  • Social

Autism spectrum disorder is typically manifested before 36 months of age. A child who first manifests the characteristics after age 3 may also meet criteria. Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by qualitative impairments in reciprocal social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication and restricted range of interests/repetitive behavior.

The diagnosis of autism does not dictate a specific placement. Autism may occur by itself or with other disabilities. Educational placement decisions should be based on the child's assessed strengths, specific impairments (noted above) and educational needs rather than on the reaction to the label of autism. Students with autism may be served in a variety of educational settings.

St. Clair County RESA employs Intervention Specialists who support the local school districts serving students with autism.

The Intervention Specialists are available to all school staff in need of autism education, training, or coaching with implementation of evidence based practices.
