About Woodland
The educational program
Woodland has adopted a standards-based program designed specifically for students with significant disabilities. It is aligned with Michigan's common core and the philosophy that all students must participate and all students must how progress.
In conjunction with the educational program, Woodland also provides the following services as needed:
- Physical Therapy
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Psychological Testing
- Audiological Testing
- Orientation and Mobility
Adaptive physical education, swimming, art/music and social skill streaming are provided to students. Students have opportunity to enhance daily living skills at our Living and Learning Center.
Community interaction
Woodland provides a protective and nurturing environment in which students learn life skills and functional academics. With the guidance of highly experienced and educated staff members, Woodland students practice these life skills in the community through three major programs:
-
Community-based instruction: Students learn how to access community resources such as stores, restaurants and community activities.
- Vocational Exploration: Students learn work skills such as reading job-related materials, using a functional vocabulary, being on time, finishing tasks and reporting to a supervisor.
- Social skills training: Students role-play reactions to different social situations to develop or reinforce proper responses.
Parent involvement
This includes parents involvement in their child’s yearly Individualized Educational Planning (IEP) review. In this review, parents discuss their child’s development and needs. Parents are encouraged to participate in Woodland’s parent-teacher organization and students’ extracurricular activities, such as the Special Olympics and evening events.
