Today, we observe Juneteenth—Freedom Day, a day that marks a significant moment in American history and a powerful reminder of the value and dignity of all. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when the final group of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two years earlier, enforcement was slow to reach all areas of the country. This moment continues to symbolize the importance of ensuring freedom and fairness are realities for everyone. Recognize the day locally by visiting the Interactive Juneteenth Community Exhibit at St. Clair County Community College. The exhibit features stories, artifacts, and educational displays that highlight the history, contributions, and experiences of African Americans throughout our country's past and present. #Juneteenth #WeAreSCCRESA #SC4
