The Clever Coyotes, a student team representing St. Clair County RESA’s Pine River Nature Center, earned first place at the 2025 Michigan Envirothon Competition, held May 16 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Competing against top high school teams from across the state, the Clever Coyotes demonstrated exceptional knowledge, critical thinking, and leadership in environmental science and natural resource conservation.

Sponsored by the Blue Water Area Conservation District, the Clever Coyotes tackled real-world environmental issues through challenges in aquatic ecology, renewable energy, soils and geology, agriculture, wildlife, and forestry. The event also included a community outreach project presentation, where students showcased their ability to apply classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges.

The Clever Coyote team members are:

  • Natalie Korotko, junior, Yale High School

  • Sage McCombs, senior, Port Huron Northern High School

  • Cooper Machala, junior, Algonac High School

The Clever Coyotes are all students at RESA’s St. Clair County Technical Education Center. They are currently participating in work-based learning placements at the Pine River Nature Center, gaining hands-on experience in environmental education and stewardship.

The team was coached by advisors Sarah Nelson, Operations Coordinator at the Pine River Nature Center, and Monique Werner, Environmental Educator at the Center.

“Envirothon is more than just a competition. It’s a platform for students to collaborate, solve problems, and impact their community,” said Sarah Nelson. “We’re incredibly proud of the Clever Coyotes and their hard work and commitment to preparing for this event.”

Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition. It empowers students to become future leaders in conservation through teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. Learn more at envirothon.org.
