Evening runway event celebrates students’ confidence and style while showcasing accessible fashion
Woodland Developmental Center is rolling out the runway for its first-ever Fash Bash on Wednesday, September 24, and the community is invited to witness something special. The public fashion show at 5:30 p.m. will feature students taking center stage to showcase adaptive clothing that combines function and style.
The school gym will be transformed into a runway, with 18 or more Woodland students modeling adaptive clothing and footwear from mainstream retailers such as Target, Walmart, Meijer, JCPenney, and Kohl’s. These stores offer clothing featuring thoughtful design elements like magnetic closures, sensory-friendly fabrics, and discrete accommodations for medical devices, demonstrating that fashion truly can be accessible to everyone.
To give the event an authentic runway atmosphere, students from St. Clair County TEC’s Cosmetology program will provide hair, makeup, and nail services to the student models. Each student participant will also get to keep the clothes and shoes they model as a reminder of their time in the spotlight.
While Woodland will host a 1:00 p.m. show for students, staff, and families, the 5:30 p.m. performance is open to the public, including local agencies and community organizations. Media are encouraged to attend and cover the event.
The inspiration for Fash Bash came from Woodland Art and Music teacher Alan Demski, who recognizes fashion’s power to build confidence and celebrate individuality. Thanks to a generous $1,200 grant from the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, Demski’s vision is becoming a reality.
“Fashion is important to everyone,” said Demski. “The ability to feel good about yourself and show the world who you are matters deeply. This runway will not only highlight fashionable clothing, but the confidence that comes from self-expression.”
