At the March 16 Board of Education meeting, we had the honor of recognizing Angela Jackson, special education teacher at Woodland Developmental Center, who was named a 2026-27 Region 5 Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the Michigan Teacher of the Year award. Angela was celebrated with a certificate, flowers, a commemorative glass apple, and the book "Mrs. Spritzer's Garden," which felt especially fitting for a teacher who has spent her career helping her students bloom. With her parents and her sister by her side, the evening was a beautiful celebration of Angela's gift for building strong relationships with students and families and her unwavering belief in every child. Congratulations, Angela! #MichiganTeacheroftheYear #WeAreSCCRESA

March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day, and we'll be celebrating by wearing mismatched socks to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome. Why mismatched socks? Socks resemble chromosomes, and the extra 21st chromosome in Down syndrome looks like a mismatch. Mismatched socks highlight that being different is beautiful and that people with Down syndrome bring unique value to the world. #WorldDownSyndromeDay #WeAreSCCRESA

This semester's Middle School Innovation Academy students are partnering with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division to answer the question, "How might we get more kids engaging with wildlife in wild places?" To help kick off the conversation, Terry McFadden, Field Operations Manager for the South Eastern Lower Peninsula, visited MSIA to share insights into the DNR's history, mission, and the many ways it protects Michigan's natural spaces and wildlife. Students got a hands-on look at wildlife artifacts, including animal traps, furs, and skulls, sparking curiosity and plenty of thoughtful questions. Follow along for updates throughout the end of the school year. #WeAreSCCRESA

Dan and Lindsay Krauskopf didn't expect to receive a statewide award. They say they're simply doing what any parent would do. But their dedication to supporting their children and partnering closely with school staff recently earned them the 2026 Exceptional Parent Award from the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children. Dan and Lindsay were nominated by their son Miles' teacher, Angela Jackson, who was recently named a Region 5 Teacher of the Year. Miles attends Woodland Developmental Center, where he receives specialized support and has been thriving over the past two years. Help us congratulate them in the comments!
